How virtual tax preparation works at Johnson & Stern — from the first call through filing.
Our tax preparers all work from their home offices. The first step is to schedule a call on their calendar. The intro call reviews your tax needs, what documents we’ll need, walks through our process, and finishes with a price estimate. You’ll get a follow-up email with your client portal login and a list of documents. As soon as documents are securely uploaded through the portal, a quick email to your preparer lets us know to get started. Most returns are finished within 4–6 business days. Once the return is ready, we send a video walkthrough so you understand your return and can confirm it’s accurate before signing. When you’re happy with it, you sign and pay for filing — all through the portal.
No. Many clients like to speak with us early in the season before they have their documents, or simply want a good list before seeking them out. The intro call walks through your questions and lets your preparer review your situation for the documents you’ll need. Afterward we send that list, then wait for you to gather everything, submit it, and let us know you’re ready.
Our client portal is integrated with our tax software, Drake. Drake Portals is protected by industry-standard security measures — all transmissions are secure and files are encrypted at rest on the server. You can send files, sign your return, pay for your tax prep, and message your preparer through the same portal. We upload your finished return there as well.
Our standard is 4–6 business days from the moment you ask us to start. Missing documents can extend that. Many returns are done much faster in January and February before the season peaks. If you need your taxes finished within a business day, you can request a rush for a $250 added fee.
Payment comes after the return is finished but before we file it with the IRS. We wait for both a signature and payment before e-filing and uploading a copy to your portal. Both the signature and the bill are handled in the client portal.
Pricing is based on the time it takes to complete the return, the forms required, and the timing of filing. We offer discounts for returns completed before March 1. To see our full pricing, sign up for a call and we’ll email you a copy of our pricing sheet. On the intro call we review which documents you need and provide a price estimate, which is also emailed as a follow-up.
If items are missing before filing, we wait for those to be added to the return. Because we wait for a final signature and payment before submitting to the IRS, we can support last-minute changes. If a change is needed after filing, a small admin charge covers submitting an amended return.
You can email your tax preparer year round — we generally reply within a business day or two, and you can always schedule a call to set aside time to chat. Clients with bookkeeping, payroll, or other accounting services through us typically connect with their preparer several times a year.
Tax preparation has been the core of our business for years, and we also offer bookkeeping, payroll, and entity creation. We work with small business owners to save as much on taxes as possible, usually starting with the return to build a holistic strategy. Bookkeeping is the backbone of every business — reach out for a quote.
